Neal Spelce heard the report of a shooting on the UT-Austin campus from the KTBC newsroom. He headed over to campus in his “Red Rover” station wagon to report on the radio live from the scene.
Spelce warned people not to come near the UT campus and provided essential information to many others relying on their radio for updates on the shooting.
He remembers an eerie calm on campus after the shooting started.
“They were like zombies. They didn’t say anything. It was a disbelief. It was quiet – after all the chaos, all these people were out there … and it was quiet.”
