“The summer of the Charles Whitman shooting, I was working for Hyltin-Manor Funeral Home. At that time the ambulance service throughout Austin was handled by each of the funeral homes.
I was in the very first ambulance called to the campus that morning.
During the day I returned to campus several times, was penned down some of the time and moved several of the wounded (none of the dead) to the hospital.
Later in the day I picked up Charles’ mother who was, of course, deceased, and took her back to the funeral home. I then participated in embalming several of the deceased including the police officer.
So, yes I have lots of memories of that day and the next couple as we cleaned up the mess.”
