Prudence Mahafie Mackintosh had just graduated from UT Austin in May of 1966. She was on her honeymoon in Paris on the day of the shooting.

The news of the shooting came to her in an American Express office in Paris.

“I saw a French tabloid and the headline was Carnage au Texas,” Mackintosh says.

Mackintosh was from the same town, Texarkana, as the Gabour family, which was gunned down by shooter Charles Whitman in the stairwell of the UT Tower on their way up to visit the observation deck.

She says she could never walk by the Tower afterwards without remembering the shooting and noticing the scars left on the South Mall.
